Every spring, Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs come alive with one of the world’s most extraordinary free events. From 16 October to 2 November 2026, the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk transforms into a 2km outdoor sculpture park. Over 100 works by artists from Australia and around the world line the sandstone clifftops, set against the Pacific Ocean. No tickets. No entry fees. Just art, sea air and some of the best coastal scenery Sydney has to offer. This is Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2026.
What to Know About Sculpture by the Sea
Sculpture by the Sea began in 1997 when founding director David Handley organised a one-day outdoor exhibition along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk. It featured 64 sculptures, was run entirely by volunteers, and drew around 25,000 visitors on a budget of just $400. That single day laid the foundation for what is now widely acknowledged as the world’s largest free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition.
The 2026 edition marks almost 30 years since that first exhibition. Each year the event draws around 450,000 visitors, with artists from across Australia and internationally presenting works that respond to the natural environment around them. The clifftops, the ocean light and the movement of the sea become part of each sculpture’s presence in a way that no indoor gallery can replicate.
What to Expect at the Exhibition
The walk runs for approximately 2 kilometres between the southern end of Bondi Beach and Tamarama Beach. The route follows a path above the ocean, with sculptures positioned across the clifftops, on grassed terraces, and along the sandstone edges.
Most visitors spend between two and three hours on the walk, depending on how long they pause at each work. The scale of the sculptures varies considerably: some are quiet and intimate, others are large enough to stop you mid-stride.
The 2026 exhibition is a milestone edition. It celebrates almost 30 years since the first Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi in 1997, and features acclaimed Japanese sculptor Keizo Ushio marking his 50th Sculpture by the Sea exhibition across the Bondi, Cottesloe and Denmark events. There are also over 30 first-time exhibitors at Bondi this year.
Entry and Access
Sculpture by the Sea is completely free. No tickets or bookings are required to walk the coastal path. Weekends attract large crowds, so a weekday visit will give you a quieter and more relaxed experience. Parking around Bondi and Tamarama is limited during the exhibition period.
If you would rather avoid the hassle of finding parking, a private tour can make the day easier. You can visit Sculpture by the Sea while also seeing other Eastern Suburbs highlights, with the itinerary organised around your day.
Why Experience It With a Private Tour of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs?
Make the Most of Your Time
If you are visiting Sydney and want to make the most of your time, Sculpture by the Sea pairs naturally with some of the other highlights of the Eastern Suburbs. Bondi Beach, Watsons Bay, The Gap and the coastal lookouts along this stretch of coastline are each worth visiting on their own. Combining them into one well-planned day makes for a genuinely memorable experience.
Enjoy a Tour Built Around Your Day
At Ready Steady Tour, our private tours Sydney are built around your day, not around a fixed schedule. We have designed our coastal experience specifically to give you time at each location, not a rushed stop-and-go run through the highlights.
Visit Key Coastal Highlights
Our private tour from Sydney to Bondi takes you from the city through the Eastern Suburbs, with stops at coastal viewpoints. We can build the itinerary around the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition so that you have enough time to walk the path and take in the works at your own pace.
Have Flexibility at Bondi Beach
We can also arrange the route so that Bondi is your final stop. That gives you the flexibility to stay longer for lunch, spend time at the beach, or continue walking along the coast independently.
How Much Time Do You Have?
Whether you have a few hours or a full day, we can adapt the experience to suit you. A half-day tour gives you a focused coastal experience with time at the key stops. A full-day tour allows for a slower pace, more time at Sculpture by the Sea, and the opportunity to explore Bondi and the surrounding area.
A Note on Sculpture by the Sea 2026
The 2026 exhibition holds genuine significance. Thirty years ago, Sculpture by the Sea was a one-day volunteer event that almost did not happen. Today it draws close to half a million visitors every year, has featured over 1,100 artists from more than 50 countries, and has made the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk one of the most recognisable outdoor gallery settings in the world.
For visitors to Sydney, it is one of those events that reminds you what makes this city worth travelling to. World-class art, a spectacular natural setting, the ocean on one side and the sandstone cliffs on the other. It is all free, and it is all accessible as part of a well-planned day along the Eastern Suburbs coastline.
